Forbes Field History

Forbes Field opened in 1909.  It was only the second steel and concrete ballpark ever built.  Many great players have called Forbes Field home, Honus Wagner, the Waner Brothers, Ralph Kiner, Roberto Clemente and Willie Stargell to name just a few.

Forbes Field is the third scoreboard issued.  We chose to pay homage to the final game that was played there on June 28, 1970.  Coincidentally they played the Cubs, the same team that opened the park in 1909.

Remember When?

This stately field was situated on the University of Pittsburgh campus. Now a building and parking lot for the University, this baseball field was the home of memories of thousands of Pirate fans both in and outside the stadium in one of the many building roofs surrounding the stadium.

Some of the great games in the Pirates history were played there. You might have been listening to the radio you snuck into school to hear the call of the bad hop that knocked out Yankees shortstop Tony Kubek during the last game of the 1960 World Series.
