Wrigley Field History
Wrigley Field actually opened in 1914 under the name Weeghman Park and was the home of the Chicago Whales in the old Federal League. Hack Wilson, Gabby Hartnett, Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins, Andre Dawson, Ryne Sandburg and Sammy Sosa are just a few of the great Cubbies who have found a home in the friendly confines.
Wrigley Field is our fifth scoreboard release. With so much history, it was too hard to decide one game or even one season to highlight, 1969? 1984? 1989? 1998?
Remember When?
Wrigley Field actually opened in 1914 under the name Weeghman Park and was the home of the Chicago Whales in the old Federal League. The name of the stadium was changed to Cubs Park in time for opening day, 1920. It was renamed Wrigley Field in his honor in 1926.
The outfield bleachers went up in 1937 along with the scoreboard by Bill Veeck. It is still manually operated, and it still has never been struck with a batted ball, although Roberto Clemente and Bill Nicholson each hit home runs that barely missed!
Just imagine the excitement when you enter this ivy-covered living shrine to baseball, plus just seeing Ernie Banks's uniform No. 14 is on a flag that flies from the left-field foul pole. Billy Williams's No. 26 flies from the right-field foul pole, and not get goose-bumps?
Hack Wilson, Gabby Hartnett, Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins, Andre Dawson, Ryne Sandburg, Sammy Sosa and back again,Greg Maddox are just a few of the great Cubbies who have found a home in the friendly confines. HOLY COW-CUBS WIN!
